MAELI FINDS ITS NEW ENERGY IN THE VINEYARDS THAT FASCINATED THE GREAT POETS

Since 2011 – the year when we embarked on this adventure – to date, we have worked hard to show what the Euganean Hills have to offer through our wines, not only in Italy but also  around the world. They have been challenging years; years of joy and achievements, but also years of great sacrifices, especially the last two. In fact, our winery is located in Vò which is among the first 11 towns in Europe to enter lockdown because of Covid-19 (on the 23rd of February 2020). Since then, we have dedicated ourselves to find new paths to improve our wines and allow them to make themselves known in every corner of the world. We have followed the rules on safety and social distancing, which were virtually unknown before the outbreak of covid-19, and we reinvented ourselves to adapt our idea of hospitality to the needs of a changing world. We have never given up, striving to turn struggle and difficulties into new incentives and opportunities. Thanks to technology, we have opened up new markets and, as a result, we have been able to make our winery better known. We have also been the first winery to successfully offer at home virtual wine tasting experiences. While our wines travelled further than we did, as soon as we were allowed to reopen, our winery became our second home. Maeli was open to everyone every day, and became the setting for artistic and cultural events whose main protagonist was wine. A glass of vine has been our explorer leading us to discover not only our own land, but also  other territories, close to home and further away. It was a tough time, but we never threw in the towel! We have seized an opportunity that will open new doors empowering us to achieve other goals and this was possible, once again, thanks to our vineyards, where everything originates.

In May 2021, we started writing a new chapter of our story with the acquisition of a further 11 hectares of vineyards and 20 hectares of woods in the “Terre Bianche del Pirio” area,  Pirio, which is situated above Villa Vescovi, is an enchanting place whose astonishing beauty made the eyes of some of the greatest poets light up. Our task now more than ever is to safeguard the beauty of this volcanic land.  We want to enhance its full potential by taking care of our vineyards through sustainable practices that respect the environment.  In 2020, our vineyards and wines have been certified organic. In the meantime, we are expanding our cellar, so we can handle the larger grape loads that we will harvest in our new 11 hectares we have opted for both artisanal and innovative winemaking techniques to ensure outstanding wines. We are also making some changes to the welcome area, in particular,  the addition of new outdoor areas from there people will enjoy a breath-taking view of Valle San Giorgio and the oldest volcanic ridge of the Euganean Hills. We are getting ready to welcome spring 2022, which is going to be the most important season in our history.

We look forward to seeing you toast to the future of what we love to call Vulcanei

Marl and Loam

The identity of the territory, which has always been at the centre of the Maeli research, has proven its great potential when planted with the Yellow Muscat grape. The ancient origin of the soil is volcanic, rich in trachyte, chalk and clay that in the vineyard are mixed with marl and loam.

This is where the name Maeli comes from.

Most of the Yellow Muscat vineyards can be found on Monte Pirio inside the National Park of the Euganean Hills in the heart of Veneto. Here nature charms for its breath-taking views overlooking the lagoon of Venice on one side and the Dolomites on the other and for the rich vegetation made up of holly oaks, strawberry trees, broom trees, prickly pears, dog rose shrubs and wild blackberries. This incredible backdrop is the ‘Terre Bianche del Pirio’, where Maeli’s Yellow Muscat holds court.

The variety of the land, the steepness of the hills, the varying exposition of the vineyards, the peculiarities of the micro-climate, the temperature excursions of this face of the hills as well as the rich vegetation, fruit trees and olive trees make up the natural context in which Maeli expresses itself through its wines.

Maeli is a proud partner of the Wine Tourism Movement
